Where does the money go?

Santa would never be able to create all those Christmas presents without all of his Santa’s helpers, aka the elves.

In the communications industry, many a broadcast show would have difficulty making it to air without the assistance of their helpers, aka the interns.

Like Santa’s elves, media interns form a fundamental link in the production chain that results in a smooth on-air show. Virtually every on-air production has a bevy of interns scrambling behind the scenes making it work. All too often, those internship positions are unpaid; making ends meet becomes a real challenge for the college students filling them.

That’s where the Pat Boland Memorial Internship Award comes to play. Through the Boland Fund, the Penn State’s College of Communications awards grants to help students who are off on these internships. The State College Santa Crawl has grown to become the largest annual donor to the Boland Fund.

The first Boland Award was granted a year ago. This past year, two awards were given out. Those recipients were:

As we grow the Boland Fund, we’ll be able to increase the number of recipients of the grants.
